Internationally known as the man who solved the mystery behind Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS), Dr. Philip M. Tierno, Jr., Ph.D. is the director of clinical microbiology and diagnostic immunology at New York University Medical Center and Mt. Sinai Medical Center, and a part-time associate professor in the departments of microbiology and pathology at New York University School of Medicine.
Having more than 30 years of experience in the field of Clinical and Medical Microbiology, Dr. Tierno is the author of The Secret Life of Germs, Protect Yourself Against Bioterrorism and Nuclear, Chemical and Biological Terrorism: Emergency Response and Public Protection and has published numerous papers on microbial ecology and environmental and medical microbiology in leading scientific and medical journals worldwide.
He serves as a consultant to the Office of Attorney General of New York State and Department of Health of the City of New York, co-founder and President of the non-profit organization "Foundation for Scientific Research in the Public Interest” and a member of the New York City Mayor's Task Force on Bioterrorism. In 1986, he was bestowed the honor of Knighthood by The Sovereign Military and Hospitaler Order of Saint John Jerusalem, Knight of Malta.
His broad expertise in the area of the environmental and medical microbiology and microbial ecology has resulted in numerous appearances on TV news, documentary, and investigative reports on shows such as 20/20, Oprah, Dateline NBC, and PrimeTime.
He completed his graduate studies at the New York University where he was awarded a M.S. degree in 1974 followed by a Ph.D. in 1977. He currently resides in New York City with his wife Josephine.
